Ten Percent of Consumers Will Give Flowers This Mother's Day

Western Union Survey Shows Consumers Will Depart from the Traditional

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Apr 20, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Western Union Company(NYSE: WU), a leader in global payments, found in a recent survey that only 10 percent of consumers will go the "traditional" route of giving flowers and candy this Mother's Day, leaving 90 percent of consumers still looking for a perfect way to thank Mom.

"Sometimes the traditional gift route isn't always what Mom wants. Whether you 'Sing It, Shout It, or Send It,' the gift of cash through Western Union is a great alternative - it's easy, convenient, and ensures Mom can choose exactly what she wants or needs," said Victoria Lopez-Negrete, Senior Vice President and General Manager, North America, Western Union.

Some gift-givers may think cash is an unappealing gift, but that is not how the recipient sees it. According to a recent Western Union consumer survey conducted by Wakefield Research, nearly three-fourths (72 percent) of adults say receiving a gift of cash is more appealing than any other type of gift.

To help express love to mothers, Western Union is offering consumers in the U.S. the option to send up to $50 for $5. Western Union also teamed up with Latin Grammy Award-winning recording artist Daddy Yankee to launch "Love in Any Language," a national campaign that has enabled consumers to create and upload original music videos on LoveInAnyLanguage.com.

Public voting for "Love in Any Language" is open through Thursday, April 21, after which entries will be narrowed down to the top 10 eligible finalists. The grand prize winner is set to receive $10,000 with a trip for two to the 2011 Billboard Latin Music Press Conference in Miami on April 27. No purchase is necessary to enter or win, and entry into the contest is subject to the Official Rules available at loveinanylanguage.com.
